The Miracle of James

By William F. Anzalone

A Story About My Brother

This is a story of my brother, who was injured at his birth. A story of a hydrocephalic, paralyzed, home confined, bedridden baby who was 100 percent dependent on my mom, dad, my sisters and me for survival. An inspirational story of young parents who were living the American dream, who had the financial means to do what they wanted and to go where they wanted and passed it all up to care for their invalid son for fifty four years. It is a story of love, dedication and sacrifice, and the belief in God, Jesus Christ and the Church, that lead my family and those who came in contact with James to witness The Miracle of James.

About the Author

Bill Anzalone is the managing partner of Anzalone & Doyle Trial Lawyers, located in Northeastern Pennsylvania. He has been the recipient of many state and national trial lawyer honors and served as president of his county Bar Association, and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association, as well as the founding president of the Luzerne County Bar Association’s charitable foundation. Bill is married to his high school sweetheart, Tina, and they have three children, Bill Jr., Jamie, and Alana.

In this book, Bill wants to share the special experience that he had living with his hydrocephalic, bedridden, home confined brother who was totally dependent for his daily existence on his mom and dad, and whose existence he describes as a miracle. He shares the heartache and also the joy the family experienced living with and caring for James—and to those who came in contact with James, a feeling of peace, comfort and hope.

My Irish Mother

She was born into poverty, losing her mother at age 10, and forced into caring for her dad—a coal miner—and her two older sisters. At age 12 she almost died from pneumonia, requiring her doctor cousin to do emergency surgery on the kitchen table as she fought to breathe.

These were thought to be bitter reminders of her past when she met my dad, who came from a large Sicilian family of 10, and who knew at an early age about hard work and how to make money. They married and soon had two beautiful daughters and a successful beer distributorship. The future was bright. It appeared my mom had escaped from the hardships of the past.

But, my mom always felt she was a cursed woman, and felt this new life was too good to be true—and she was right. Her third child was a beautiful, black-haired, brown-eyed baby boy, whose neck was injured at birth.
